Google revenue is one of the most sought after revenue types online.

What usually poses a challenge to most marketers however, is how to achieve a significant revenue as opposed to trickles on and off.

What is Revenue?

For the benefit of the beginner internet marketer, derives to the publisher, from the adverts advertisers place through Google on the website of a registered/approved publisher with Google.

There are a number of preset defaults both on the publisher’s Google Adsense account and on the publisher’s website which may need some adjustment to give optimally targeted adverts. The concern of this article is however, on modifying the preset default as it relates to .

What is section targeting?

Section targeting allows the publisher to suggest sections of his text and HTML content that he would like Google to emphasize or downplay when matching ads to his site’s content.

How to implement section targeting

First of all, section targeting should only be implemented by those reasonably at home with HTML.

To implement section targeting, the publisher will need to add a set of special HTML comment tags to the source code of his website. These tags will mark the beginning and end of whichever section(s) he would like to emphasize or de-emphasize for ad targeting.

The HTML tags to emphasize a page section takes the following format:

<!– google_ad_section_start –>

<!– google_ad_section_end –>

You can also designate sections you’d like to have ignored by adding a (weight=ignore) to the starting tag:

<!– google_ad_section_start(weight=ignore) –>

For an HTML site, when incorporated, it will look as follows:

<html><head><title>Section targeting</title></head>
<!– google_ad_section_start –>

This is the text of your webpage. Most of your content resides here.

<!– google_ad_section_end –>

For wordpress sites, the opening and closing section targeting tags should be wrapped around the following code:

<?php the_content( __(‘READ MORE &raquo;’, ‘evolve’ ) ); ?>

which is within the single.php template which itself is sometimes within the Main Index Template (index.php)

When incorporated, it would turn out as follows:

<!– google_ad_section_start –>
<?php the_content( __(‘READ MORE &raquo;’, ‘evolve’ ) ); ?>

<!– google_ad_section_end –>

How does this feature implementation increase/improve Google ?

Once implemented, the above serves to suggest to Google to concentrate its ads-to-content-relevancy, within the specified bracket which if well implemented, will have excluded all irrelevant ( to the publisher’s targeted keywords) content.

The tendency is therefore for Google to now feature much more highly targeted ads subsequently. Flowing from this, site visitors will find the ads more relevant and are more likely to click on these ads, thereby enhancing google adsense revenue to the site.

Things to note

It is against Google’s policy to try and manipulate results you will get by focusing attention on a section/s that are unrelated to the general content of the web page, all in a bid to get a page to feature ads which are significantly unrelated to the web page’s content generally. To avoid this, this feature should only be used to emphasize significant sections of the publisher’s site’s relevant content.

Google has indicated that it cannot guarantee the outcome of the implementation of the section targeting code, though it is it’s own suggestion and it has reasonable expectation of a positive outcome.

The effect of the implementation of the Google Adsense section targeting may not manifest for up to 2 weeks because it may take that long for google adsense crawlers which is quite separate from Google search crawlers to revisit and crawl the publishers website and reflect the effect of the implementation of Google Adsense section targeting.

In summary, it remains a very positive approach to kickstart your Google Adsense revenue, by implementing section targeting.
