According to Wikipedia, “A trackback is one of three types of linkbacks, methods for Web authors to request notification when somebody links to one of their documents. This enables authors to keep track of who is linking, and so referring, to their articles. Some weblog software programs, such as WordPress, Drupal and Movable Type, support automatic pingbacks where all the links in a published article can be pinged when the article is published. The term is used colloquially for any kind of linkback.”
One notable blogging service that does not however support trackback is Blogger.
Ordinarily, trackback is quite useful in that it can for example be used to identify various sites that have republished your articles or are referring to them or your site in one way or the other.
However, just like comment spam, there is widespread trackback spam all over the blogosphere. The objective of this trackback spammers is to use this approach to obtain what i call “forced reciprocal links” and in some cases traffic and attention to their websites.
You must have observed many blog posts inserting many links at the bottom of their posts and describing these as “Related Blogs”. Other unsuspecting webmaster’s blog post titles are automatically generated almost as soon as the unsuspecting webmaster finishes publishing his post and inserted at the bottom of these spammers blog posts.
This strategy will only work where the unsuspecting webmaster has trackback turned on. I for example have the trackback feature in my wordpress blog turned on in view of the advantage of highlighting to me whenever my article is republished by any webmaster or whenever a reference is made to any of my articles.
I however now have the arduous task of monitoring these trackbacks and eventually deleting them if i am not to be in the business of giving reciprocal links inadvertently
